Hugo Boss audience

This cologne ad by Hugo Boss is visibly targeted at men. The creators of the ad first use the rhetorical appeal of ethos by featuring the celebrated, hollywood actor, Theo James on their ad campaign. By featuring a male celebrity it makes the ad much more appealing to men. Secondly, The models/actors featured on the poster also appeals to a man's desire for aesthetic sensation. The target audience believes that because Theo James is attractive they will be attractive to for using the product. Secondly, the ad features a female model looking at the male model in a very seductive way. This both catches the attention of the audience, because as we’ve all heard “sex sells”. In addition the seductive and sexual look on the female model’s face both appeals to the need for sex as well and attention. Watching this Gillette ad felt like when the teacher scolds the whole class because a few people didn’t do the homework. The ad relies purely on pathos, with the exception of Terry Crews being featured for a few seconds (Ethos). The ad definitely appeals to the need to be safe and to achieve. It tries to make the audience feel that by buying this product they will make this world a better and safer place as well as making you a better man and person. The context of the ad is heavily rooted in the news of today, especially the #metoo movement which has seen the conviction of many sexual predators and offenders. The ad tries to reflect this shift in cultural values and gender equality in their ad. Chinua Achebe’s 1958 novel, Things Fall Apart was written with the primary goal of presenting a balanced and honest depiction of pre-colonial Nigerian life. The novel follows the life of the Igbo man, Okonkwo and his conflict with the arrival of British colonialist missionaries. Achebe never shies away from showing both the darker and greater parts of each culture; in order to explore the deep complexities and impact, colonialism had on Nigerian culture. This duality and balanced depiction of both cultures ultimately serves as a means of catharsis for Achebe’s own struggle with his dual-culture identity.
